SUDDEN SHUTTERS
San Antonio brewery to close Hemisfair taproom amid construction woes

Künstler Tap Haus says continued construction is forcing it to shutter.
Downtown San Antonio’s ongoing construction woes are forcing a Hemisfair bar to close its doors. In a frank announcement, Künstler Brewing says it is closing its Tap Haus offshoot on October 18 after a less than three-year run.
“We opened our doors full of sunshine, steins, and big dreams… and two weeks later, the bulldozers rolled in,” wrote the owners via social media. “Three years of fences, tractor trailers, and dust later — we’ve decided it’s time to call it. Turns out it’s hard to compete with a never-ending construction zone (especially when you show up for work and realize the sidewalk’s disappeared).”
Künstler owners Vera and Brent Deckard debuted the concept in summer 2023, bringing new life to the historic San Antonio park. But construction near the tap house often made it impossible for guests to reach the business. In addition to the missing sidewalks, the spot was often fenced in on both sides, according to the post.
The South Alamo Street project was originally slated to wrap up in 2024, but utility work is pushing it back until spring 2026. The work, which affects both Hemisfair and La Villita, has made two of San Antonio’s most popular tourist destinations difficult to navigate.
The brewery says it will go out the “Künstler way,” hosting the pre- and after-party for the San Antonio Beer Festival held at Civic Park on October 18. The original Künstler Brewing, opened in 2017 at 302 E Lachapelle in Southtown, will remain open as usual.
“We’re turning our focus fully back to our first home — making Künstler Brewing even better, even more connected, and even more us,” wrote the Deckards. “We’ve always tried to listen and grow with our community, and that’s where our energy belongs. We’re not looking for a second location — we’re looking to make the one we have the best it can be.”
