OPENING ALERT
Jeni's ice creams sets opening date for first San Antonio shop
Jeni's will debut its La Cantera shop in late July.
Scream if the spirit moves you. After teasing its first San Antonio location in the spring, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams will finally arrive at 15900 La Cantera Pkwy on July 23.
Many locals may know the brand from its cheerful pints, sold everywhere from national behemoths like Target to gourmet grocers like Royal Blue. But Jeni’s didn’t exactly take a conventional approach to the checkout lane.
Founder Jeni Britton Bauer started the company at only 22, when she was a history and art student and amateur kitchen chemist. According to lore, her first frosty experiment was adding cayenne to chocolate ice cream.
Britton Bauer eventually opened a Columbus, Ohio shop in 2002, and began expanding in 2005. Since then, Jeni’s has become a phenomenon, credited with starting a new wave of artisan ice cream. Besides launching nationwide distribution, the brand spawned a James Beard Award-winning cookbook, and its storefronts can now be found in 15 states and Washington, D.C.
But the commitment to quirky flavors hasn’t wavered. Each parlor carries a wide variety of scoops in cones, flights, and pints in a rotating lineup of 19 creative flavors. Guests can expect classics like sweet cream or “milkiest” chocolate, along with creations like hibiscus chili punch, strawberry pretzel pie, watermelon taffy, wildberry lavender, and Savannah buttermint.
According to a Facebook event page, Jeni’s will celebrate its San Antonio debut with free scoops for everyone who shows up between 5-9 pm on July 23. The first 50 guests will also receive a swag bag. Once up and running, the kiosk will be open Monday through Thursday, 11 am-9 pm; Friday and Saturday, 11 am-10 pm; and Sunday, 11 am-8 pm.
