Beloved west San Antonio burger joint temporarily closes after blaze

The Good News Burgers is recovering from an early morning blaze.
Lauded Alamo City restaurant The Good News Burgers is temporarily closed as it recovers from an early morning blaze on Tuesday, January 6. The popular West Side joint at 972 SW 36th was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported.
San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) officials say firefighters first arrived at 3:18 am, with the first arriving crews finding a “significant amount of fire in the structure.” The blaze was under control in approximately 15 minutes after an “aggressive interior attack.” A SAFD rep says the cause is still under investigation.
Caterer Robert Walker first opened the business in 2013 using the name Papa’s Burgers, a tribute to his late father. In 2021, Houston-based Pappa’s Brothers dished out a cease and desist letter, accusing the locally owned spot of infringing on a 2008 trademark.
Although Walker eventually complied with the name change, costs associated with the rebranding — as well as “transient increases” and “non-negotiable lease agreements” — led the entrepreneur to close the San Pedro and Portranco outposts of the then four-unit chain.
The legal fracas did not stop The Good News from racking up accolades. The burger joint became a fixture of “best of” lists from local outlets like KENS 5 and San Antonio Magazine and national players like Yelp, MSN, and Money magazine.
It’s unclear when The Good News will reopen, although heat and smoke damage were reportedly minimal. A request for further comment was not returned in time for publication.
