A classic bakery and a new downtown pizzeria slice into San Antonio dining news
It's a mixed bag for San Antonio food news this week, as beloved favorites throw in the towel and new businesses rush to take their place. Need some succor from all the whiplash? We've found that free fajitas usually do the trick.
Openings and closings
West Coast bakery SusieCakes will soon be whispering sweet nothings in San Antonio. According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Records, the California-based chain is developing its first Alamo City location at 7322 Jones Maltsberger Rd. #218. The business takes a more classical approach than some of its trendy competitors, focusing on traditional cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Construction is expected to wrap up in August, just in time for the busy holiday season.
Downtown's pizza desert has finally sprung a new oasis. FatHead Pizzaopened on April 9 at 152 E. Pecan St. #101, the former home of Kimura. The restaurant, owned by locals Joseph G. Gonzales and Dan Ward, serves New York-style slices and pies, salads, subs, and desserts. Wine and beer are also on tap.
After a five-year run, Boerne's Dog & Pony Grill is being put out to pasture. In a social media announcement, the owners shared that April 30 would be its last day in business due to "circumstances beyond [their] control." The craft beer mecca was one of Boerne's most popular watering holes, offering a large patio, playscapes, and live music.
Asian comfort food staple Ming's has branched out with a second location at 17022 Fiesta Texas Dr. in La Cantera Heights. Currently in its soft opening phase, the restaurant serves fan favorite bao, rice bowls, and noodles with a boozy twist. Sister bar Jujube, named after owner Ming Qian von Bargen's favorite fruit, will stir up a variety of craft cocktails.
Taiwanese eatery Wei Chow is the latest victim of San Antonio's turbulent hospitality market. In a frank April 10 social media statement, the owners said staff shortages prevented them from meeting their quality standards. The closure is effective immediately.

El Sabrosito's business came to a screeching halt on April 9 when a car crashed into its building. According to a Facebook post, the team is working to return the building to an operational state so the restaurant can resume service.
