Popular Vietnamese food truck rolls into first San Antonio storefront

Cơm Tấm Bà Thi is known for its Vietnamese comfort food.
A popular Vietnamese food truck on San Antonio’s Northeast Side is trading its wheels for walls.Cơm Tấm Bà Thi is temporarily closed as it prepares to open a brick-and-mortar at 4941 Walzem Rd. on April 4.
The mobile eatery has slowly built a name for itself since it opened in 2020, operating on weekends in the Pep Boys parking lot at 5616 Walzem Rd. In a Facebook post, the owners said it will be closed for the remainder of March as it finishes out its first storefront.
Cơm Tấm Bà Thi is named for its signature dish, cơm tấm, a broken rice dish historically eaten by farmworkers in the Mekong Delta. The concept serves it with a pork chop and accoutrements like carrots, cucumber, julienned pork, and a fried egg.
The menu also includes comfort Vietnamese staples like banh khot (bite-sized pancakes topped with shrimp), bánh xèo (savory crepes), and bún thịt nướng (a cold rice vermicelli dish). The new storefront sign posted on social media, however, hints that the menu might be expanding with the addition of phở.
Cơm Tấm Bà Thi replaces Mamma Lou’s Soul Food Kitchen in the Windcrest strip mall. The latter shuttered in November 2025 after a five-year run.
A request for more information from the restaurant was not immediately returned at press time. CultureMap will update this article should the owners return with more information on the business hours and menu.
