SUDDEN SHUTTERS
Popular breakfast spot calls it quits after 2 years in San Antonio
Chilaquiles Buen Dia shuttered after a vandalism incident.
After vandals stripped it of copper wiring, El Paso import Chilaquiles Buen Dia appears to be permanently closed. The restaurant, located in the former home of Earl Abel’s at 1639 Broadway, has seemingly disconnected its phone number and has removed the San Antonio location from its Instagram bio.
The mini chain did not return a request for more information by publication time. But when an Instagram follower asked if the San Antonio location was closed, the restaurant simply replied “yes.”
The incident follows an April 8 theft of its wiring. According to KSAT reporting, the general manager walked into a power outage, which he said robbed the restaurant of five days of income. Although the concept originally planned to reopen on April 15, that appears to have never happened.
Pan y Agua Group, the owners of Chilaquiles Buen Dia, moved into the Earl Abels spot in June 2024. The iconic diner had shuttered the previous August, citing staffing difficulties and rising price pressures from inflation.
Although it maintained its predecessor's affordability, Buen Dia offered a different type of cuisine. Specializing in chilaquiles with add-ons like citrus-roasted chicken, carnitas, or roasted vegetables, it also sold tacos and snacks such as flautas and homemade chicharrones.
San Antonians can continue to get that menu, but they’ll have to hop on a plane. The closest locations are both almost eight hours away in El Paso.
