BUNS OF GLORY
12 top San Antonio chefs face off in epic gourmet Burger Showdown

Bandit BBQ & Burgers is one of the competitors of this year's Burger Showdown.
Plenty of San Antonio chefs may boast about making the city’s best burger, but it takes some grit to go bun-for-bun in a side-by-side taste test. But that’s exactly what 12 of Alamo City’s culinary superstars are doing on October 10 during the sixth annual Burger Showdown at Cherrity Bar.
As always, the beefy battle was organized by This effort was organized by online culinary series Homegrown Chef and Flavors of Texas, the multimedia offshoot of the influential San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group. This year, the event has a new nonprofit beneficiary, Mercy Chefs, to support the continued flood recovery efforts in Kerr County.
The fan-voted competition takes place from 6:30-9:30 pm with live karaoke from Tammy Cruz. Hopefully, she has Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise” already queued.
The burger samples are kept slider-sized to ensure guests won’t have to be wheeled out on a gurney, but Chef Diana Anderson of JD’s Chili Parlor will be scooping up unlimited fries. Texas Cookie Shop will come in clutch with sweet treats, and cocktails, beer, and wine will be available for purchase from Cherrity.
This year’s 12 brawlers include:
- Chef Justin Bluhm of STXBBQ — Blackberry Bacon Cheesecake Slider
- Chef Ernie Bradley of Cherrity Bar — The I Blue Myself Burger
- Chef Joseph Casanova of Bandit BBQ & Burgers — Bandit Prime Brisket Burger
- Chef Jared Cattoni of Dos Sirenos Brewing — Pomegranate Al Pastor Burger

For the first time this year, San Antonio's youth will get a voice in the showdown. Founder Kimberly Suta’s cousin, Liam Garcia, will be judging a new category that measures whether the burgers pass the kid test.
“I can’t believe we’ve made it this far, but here we are — year six and still going,” says Suta. “Every chef who has participated in the Burger Showdown has brought deliciousness and camaraderie, but this year’s line-up of 12 chefs is super exciting. And let me tell you, they were pretty competitive this year, coming up with the most creative burgers. I can’t wait to see who wins!”
