Quirky bakery The Art of Donut moves out of San Antonio after 10 years
The Art of Donut is closing in late July.
After 10 years, a Midtown bakery is leaving a hole in San Antonio’s sweets scene. The Art of Donut at 3428 N St Mary's St. will be closing on July 26 as its owners prepare to move the concept to a new city.
Andrea Aguirre, a marketing professional, and Miguel Aja, a fourth-generation baker, launched the business shortly after beginning a romance. The couple embarked on a whirlwind tasting tour through America’s bakeries, later quitting their jobs to open The Art of Donut at the Point Park and Eats in November 2016.
The idea was an immediate success. Years before Voodoo Doughnut was luring tourists downtown, Aguirre and Aja were serving gourmet doughnuts topped with cereal and unexpected ingredients like cheddar cream cheese and jalapeño jelly.
By July 2017, the couple had taken over the former home of The Fairview coffee shop. The quirky maximalist POV continued with creations like the ever-popular Sweet Pig with maple icing and bacon.
But many got to know the shop for its letter and number-shaped creations, available in both regular and giant sizes. The doughnuts became an Instagram sensation and a local must for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. Appropriately, the treats were featured in the goodbye post, spelling out “thank you so mucho.”
Aguirre and Aja did not share exactly where they were moving, but shared via a direct message that it would still be in Texas. But after building their business in the Alamo City, Aguirre and Aja did admit in the post that the closure was “bittersweet news.”
“We can’t express enough gratitude for your unwavering love and support throughout the years,” they wrote on Instagram. “Each smile, every donut shared, and all the moments we’ve had together will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”
