COMING ATTRACTIONS
New San Antonio ice house moves into La Gloria's former Dominion home
The menu will include tacos, burgers, and more
Four years after chef Johnny Hernandez closed the Dominion location of La Gloria, a new family-friendly restaurant is finally taking up its space. 16th Street Ice House, located at 21819 I-10 W, launched with a soft opening on October 24.
The restaurant has kept mostly hush-hush, but it appears to be from the owners behind Taco 16th Street, a tiny chain with outposts in San Antonio and Odessa. The logo — a rendering of an al pastor trompo — is nearly identical to the taqueria, and the food at the soft was provided by its taco truck.
The ice house (and a few influencers) have revealed a few more details via social media. The menu expands from tacos to Tex-Mex dishes like enchiladas and fajitas and pub grub like chicken tenders and burgers. A flyer passed out at the soft opening promised beer and cocktails.
Perhaps more importantly for Dominion and Boerne families, the spot offers plenty of ways to blow off steam. The compound features a pickleball court, cornhole, and a playscape for the kids. Lounge chairs and a fire pit flank the patio for less active pursuits.
The decor isn’t a far stretch from La Gloria. Although Hernandez packed up his metal mariachi, the property includes an oversized catrina and a painted calavera. Bright orange covers everything from benches to umbrellas.
La Gloria Dominion opened in 2014 as the restaurant’s flagship, taking up twice the square footage of the Pearl original. Hernandez shuttered it in 2022, citing highway construction and the area’s rapid growth. Those headaches have mostly calmed, although the neighborhood is still seeing plenty of new faces.
16th Street Ice House has not posted regular hours, and its website is still a placeholder. Neighbors can follow along for updates on Instagram.
