COMING ATTRACTIONS
Nostalgic froyo chain to make San Antonio debut near Stone Oak

16 Handles has revealed the site of its first San Antonio shop.
San Antonians might not yet be ready to admit they once thought Macklemore was the jam, but the 2010s froyo craze is back. After teasing its Alamo City expansion in January, frozen dessert chain 16 Handles has revealed its first Stone Oak-area shop will arrive at 22810 U.S. Hwy. 281 N. in late summer.
New Texas filings reveal that the growing franchise will convert a shell building into a 1,800-square-foot shop, with construction set to begin in late April. As always, details of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's project timelines often change without notice.
Entrepreneur Solomon Choi started the self-serve frozen yogurt shop in the East Village, New York, in 2008, beating most companies to the froyo frenzy of the next decade. In 2022, the company was acquired by the then-largest franchise holder, Neil Hershman. YouTube personality Danny Duncan, known for prank videos and skateboarding, holds a significant stake.
The name nods to the 16 original yogurt flavors and classic ‘80s movie Sixteen Candles. Those varieties have nearly doubled since the early days and now include standards like vanilla, cookie dough, and birthday cake, and trendier offerings like black matcha, butter beer, and the esoteric Blue Sky. The latter might taste like a cumulus cloud or an underused social media platform; 16 Handles does not explain.
The swirls can be loaded with over 50 toppings and sauces. 16 Handles also serves traditional soft serve, milkshakes, smoothies, and sugar cookie dough with rainbow sprinkles.
Froyo mania surged between 2009 and 2013, with chains like Yogurtland and Pinkberry becoming national phenomena. Fred Frey, VP of Franchise Development for 16 Handles, says a “ surge in popularity of [16 Handles’] product” is driving the 2026 expansion.
"We are eager to go big in Texas, and I’m ecstatic that we have had the opportunity to team up with experienced local business owners who are passionate about bringing the best dessert to their communities," Hershman said in an earlier statement. "16 Handles is focused on scaling at the right time in the right way and bringing a lot of excitement around frozen yogurt and soft serve."
