Popular froyo chain to open first San Antonio shop near Stone Oak

16 Handles will make its San Antonio debut near Stone Oak.
San Antonio, are you ready to relive the glory years of froyo? Upscale frozen dessert chain 16 Handles is entering 2026 with a nationwide expansion, including its first Alamo City shop, expected to arrive late summer near Stone Oak.
The company revealed the expansion via a press release trumpeting new 25-unit franchise deals spread across seven states. A company rep confirmed the upcoming Alamo City opening, but said it wasn’t yet ready to share the exact address.
The self-serve frozen yogurt shop was founded in the East Village, New York, by entrepreneur Solomon Choi. In 2022, the company was acquired by the then-largest franchise holder, Neil Hershman. YouTube personality Danny Duncan, known for prank videos and skateboarding, holds a significant stake.
According to Forbes, the name is a nod to the 16 original yogurt flavors and classic ‘80s movie Sixteen Candles. Those varieties have nearly doubled since the early days and now include standards like vanilla, cookie dough, and birthday cake, and trendier offerings like Dubai chocolate, black matcha, and butter beer.
The swirls can be festooned with over 50 toppings and sauces. 16 Handles also serves traditional soft serve, milkshakes, smoothies, and sugar cookie dough with rainbow sprinkles.
Froyo mania surged between 2009 and 2013, with chains like Yogurtland and Pinkberry becoming national phenomena. By the mid-2010s, it had peaked enough to be lampooned on NBC sitcom The Good Place. Still, Fred Frey, VP of Franchise Development for 16 Handles, says a “ surge in popularity of [16 Handles’] product” is driving the 2026 expansion.
"We are eager to go big in Texas, and I’m ecstatic that we have had the opportunity to team up with experienced local business owners who are passionate about bringing the best dessert to their communities," Hershman said in an earlier statement. "16 Handles is focused on scaling at the right time in the right way and bringing a lot of excitement around frozen yogurt and soft serve."
