Caribbean cravings
San Antonio favorite The Jerk Shack hatches new restaurant on the Far West Side
Far West Siders who’ve been desperately craving some perfectly spiced and marinated chicken, drool-worthy mac ’n’ cheese, and seductive fried green tomatoes no longer need to be jerked around by underwhelming imitations of the real thing. The Jerk Shack in back!
The overwhelmingly popular Caribbean-inspired restaurant from owner and award-winning chef Nicola Blaque will open the doors to its new brick-and-mortar location on Friday, January 14 at 1 pm.
The new Jerk Shack is located at 10234 State Hwy. 151, suite 103, in the new 151 Plaza development on the Far West Side and replaces the original shack, which closed in September in preparation for the new restaurant.
The new 2,200-square-foot restaurant will offer kiosk-style ordering for dine-in service, as well as a drive-thru so jerk fans can easily pick up their online orders.
But let’s get down to the (spiced) meat and potato (salad) essentials and talk about the menu of “artisan Caribbean cuisine.” While the new Jerk Shack location will feature all the dishes San Antonians have hankered for since Blaque first launched the Jamaica-inspired concept in 2018 — including jerk chicken, wings, pork, ribs, tacos, braised oxtail, and uncommonly delicious mac ’n’ cheese, potato salad, and pineapple habanero slaw — she and chef Lionel “Butch” Blache are also offering up some new menu items.
New highlights include fried chicken, pepper shrimp, fried green tomatoes, and — oh yeah — beer and wine, the perfect soothing accompaniment to The Jerk Shack’s fiery spiced meats.
“We are so excited to open this new and improved Jerk Shack that will allow us the room to serve and host more people,” Blaque says. “We have the capability in this space to create the dishes that we’re known for, as well as the ability to expand on some new items that we believe will become new signature favorites.”
The introduction of the Far West Side location precedes the anticipated opening of The Jerk Shack’s brick-and-mortar restaurant in the historic Schultze House at Hemisfair, set to open sometime this spring or summer.
In honor of the opening of the new Far West Side shack, the first 20 Jerk Shack guests will receive $10 toward their order.
The new Jerk Shack location will be open Monday through Thursday 11 am-8 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am-9 pm, and Sunday 11 am-4 pm.
