Affluent San Antonio suburb ranked 4th best place to live in Texas

Alamo Heights, a small affluent suburb in San Antonio, has been ranked the No. 4 best place to live in Texas in 2025 by rankings and review website Niche.com.
The survey determined the best places to live in based on crime rates, public school rankings, the local cost of living, job opportunities, and more using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, and others.
In Niche's national rankings of the best places to live in the U.S., Alamo Heights ranked 53rd overall.
The city is situated just four miles north of downtown, in between San Antonio's Olmos Park and Terrell Hills neighborhoods. It's bordered by McAllister Freeway on the west, E. Basse Road to the north, and N. New Braunfels Avenue on the east.
The suburb boasts a population of more than 7,400 residents, and Niche gave it an "A-plus" rating thanks to its family friendliness, its high-ranking public schools, its nightlife, and more.
"Living in Alamo Heights offers residents a sparse suburban feel and most residents own their homes," Niche says. "In Alamo Heights there are a lot of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. Many families live in Alamo Heights and residents tend to lean conservative."
Alamo Heights is also near popular eateries like CultureMap's 2024 Best New Restaurant winner Thai Bird, and will soon welcome two Houston-based restaurants this summer.
Residents enjoy living in close proximity to popular family friendly attractions like the McNay Art Museum, Olmos Basin Park, Alamo Quarry and Quarry Village shopping malls, and more. But many reviewers praise Alamo Heights' close-knit community feel.
"Nearly everything you want is within a five minute drive, it feels very safe and the schools get great ratings," one reviewer wrote. "Downtown, The Pearl, King William, and Monte Vista are all right close by and offer tons of great restaurants and unique shopping. Alamo Heights has a small close community feel with wonderful access to both the airport and all the big city fun of downtown."
An Alamo Heights home is worth a median $766,000, which is far higher than the national median home value of $303,400. Median rent prices land at about $1,400 per month.
Alamo Heights was the only San Antonio-area suburb to make it into the top 10 best places to live in Texas, with neighboring Terrell Hills (No. 24) landing among the top 25.
