Cali athleisure brand Vuori stretches into San Antonio's La Cantera

Vuori is stretching into San Antonio’s Shops at La Cantera. The buzzy California athleisure brand is opening its first Alamo City location at 15900 La Cantera Pkwy in 2027.

Founded in 2015 by former model and avid climber Joe Kudla, Vuori began as a men’s activewear line sold directly to consumers. The brand, named for the Finnish word for mountain, was the entrepreneur’s second attempt to use the name after previously using it for a graphic t-shirt line.

Although the brand has run a physical storefront in Encinitos since 2016, it was mostly an online operation until retailers like Nordstrom, REI, and Equinox began picking it up. Now expanded to a lifestyle brand for all genders, it operates around 40 stores in major U.S. metros.

Unlike competitors like Lululemon and Under Armour, Vuori’s clothing is meant to move between the gym and everyday life. None of the gear looks overtly "workout." Instead, the brand focuses on soft separates like breezy rompers, cozy cashmere sweaters, and waffle henleys.

Less daring than FP Movement, also coming to La Cantera, Vuori generally avoids pattern, though the occasional risque stripe does make it into the lookbook. The colors are mostly subdued, save for a few tops in sunny yellow or spice orange.

Vuori has not yet revealed details on the store, but the 4,795-square-foot space will give plenty of room for apparel and accessories. According to a new Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing, construction will wrap mid-February 2027, although timelines are subject to change.

The suite number used in the filing, #1190, currently belongs to womenswear shop Chico’s. Neither employees at the La Cantera location nor corporate were able to confirm the outpost is closing. A request for more information from Vuori was not immediately returned.

Amazon may be convenient, and La Cantera might work for designer duds, but when it comes to creating a head-turning fit, you’ll need to turn to vintage. Selling everything from psychedelic rompers to cult labels to ironic t-shirts, these six San Antonio shops aren’t just budget-friendly. They’re the difference between “you look nice” and “wow.”

The Vaulti
This men's mecca near the St. Mary's Strip is stuffed with Y2K finds like trucker hats, JNCO jeans, and t-shirts picturing Tim Duncan, Kurt Cobain, or “Believe”-era Cher. But its streetwear sections are what really feed our inner hypebeast. Check for brands like Bape, Supreme, and Balenciaga, and don’t forget to browse the kicks.

Canela
Keep an eye out for a neon rose when you're making your way downtown. Although meticulously curated, this resale boutique doesn’t cater to just one type of customer. Slink into a Halston-esque dress, hang tough in a cropped bowler shirt, or jack into the Matrix wearing a leather duster. The shop is so effortlessly cool that you’ll want to rep the brand. Check out the cropped merch featuring pop culture baddies like Poison Ivy and Dennis Rodman.

Hello Tallulah
Founded by fashion blogger Kristina Uriegas-Reyes, this Deco District staple is all about dopamine dressing. A ‘50s era wiggle dress has a quirky lettuce print; a whimsical ‘70s blouse captures the Moulin Rouge in fall. None of the size-inclusive pieces have a whiff of basic, but paired with a coffee core base, they can look decisively modern. Or why not throw out trends entirely? Clash the patterns, throw on a yard of chunky bracelets, and channel Iris Apfel.

Texas Thrift
With four locations in San Antonio, this Brownsville-based chain is one of the biggest thrift havens in the city. You probably already know the score — it has tons of bags, shoes, suits, skirts, jeans, and everything else that donors discarded on a closet purge. While it is highly unlikely you’ll find Alessandro Michele Gucci, a little fashion knowledge does pay off. Those pleated no-brand tropical wool pants from the 90s could look very Celine. The woven Pappagallo slide can take you straight to the resort.

Get in the car, bitch, we’re going thrifting. Even Regina George couldn’t resist this Beacon Hill shop filled with lacy camis, embellished jeans, and enough going out tops for a MySpace album. Want to go full Millennial? Walk past the turquoise lockers to the stacks of plushies, tapes, and VHS cassettes. Occasionally, there is even a pastel slimline phone, in case you have a few things to say about Gretchen Wieners.

The Obituaries
A vintage shop tucked away in one of the best sandwich spots in San Antonio? Why not? This extension of Broadway’s The Newstand is a fashionista secret with the same attention to detail as co-founders Dez Rodriguez and Page Pressley’s main spot. Most of it is menswear, some of it is sporty, and the jewelry leans Marfa. But all of it is the kind of in-the-know gear you won’t find at North Star Mall — like a roomy pair of Engineered Garments drabs with tags.
