Defying Gravity
San Antonio theater gets wicked for the return of a Broadway classic
Before the world of female empowerment was Barbie Pink, it was Elphaba Green. Wicked, the retro-active musical prequel to the Wizard of Oz and one of the longest-running Broadway shows of all time is hitting the Majestic Theatre stage this December, with tickets going on sale on September 15.
Wicked became a defining piece of the Broadway canon in 2003, thanks in part to its complex portrayal of female friendship. But it was the performances of Idina Menzel as "Wicked Witch of the West" Elphaba Thropp and Kristin Chenoweth as "Good Witch" Glinda Upland that made the show unforgettable.
Numbers like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity" — that later became Broadway staples — brought humor and boldness to the twist on a classic story, and have inspired countless renditions by professional singers and amateurs alike. Elphaba's "battle cry" closing the first act of the show is one of the most famous runs in musical theater.
Even though it's not the original Broadway cast — and it hasn't been in New York for decades — San Antonians will see the same caliber of performers, cast by Broadway Across America. The company is also bringing a much newer hit, SIX, to the Majestic Theatre in October.
Wicked will bring nostalgia to San Antonio for 24 performances between December 20, 2023, and January 07, 2024. The placement around the holidays makes this show a great opportunity to gift a ticket to a musical theater lover or someone who could use a classic entry point into the art.
Individual tickets (starting at $45) for Wicked will go on sale Friday, September 15, at 10 am at majesticempire.com. Group pricing is available for groups of 10 or more. Reserve by calling 210-226-5967.
