Tom Cruise stops by AMC Rivercenter during San Antonio visit

Tom Cruise stopped in San Antonio two days after Mission Impossible's Mexico City premiere.
Tom Cruise made good on a recent promise to visit Military City on May 22, signing autographs at Joint Base San Antonio before heading to a packed 2 pm screening of Mission Impossible — The Final Reckoning at AMC Rivercenter. There were no pyrotechnics or flashy stunts, but the Hollywood superstar delivered plenty of dazzle.
Cruise announced the visit via a May 8 Instagram video, promising to visit Fort Sam Houston and “some theaters.” Social media sleuths quickly got to work trying to figure out just which screening he would grace, posting videos of their own impossible missions accompanied by Lalo Schifrin’s iconic score.
True to his word, he made his first stop at Joint Base where he met with leadership and service members. A Reddit user claiming to work at Fort Sam claimed he was going to jump onto the base with the Army’s Golden Knights Parachute Team, but it’s more likely he took a limo.
Cruise’s vague teaser was a boom for area cinemas, with social media users reporting packed houses at afternoon shows throughout the city. As predicted in CultureMap’s previous story about the appearance, he showed up at AMC Rivercenter with director Christopher McQuarrie.
Cruise gave a brief introduction to the movie, seemingly still with the military on his mind.
“It’s a great privilege to be here with you today,” he told movie fans. “I just wanted to thank you for what you do for the country.”
The AMC pop-in appears to be his sole San Antonio theater stop, but CultureMap will update this article should he surprise more action fans. Cruise will next jet off to Dallas for more screening appearances and a taste of the city’s barbecue.
