Tell 'em Large Marge sent ya! The San Antonio Street Art Initiative (SASAI) is throwing a massive bash at 313 Chestnut on August 21 to celebrate the anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and the birthday of its late creator, Paul Reubens.
Everybody’s Playhouse, a special edition of the nonprofit’s Third Friday Artwork, will take place from 7-11 pm, bringing more than 25 artists together to honor one of the city’s most famous pop-culture moments. Organizers describe the event as a “colorful, chaotic tribute to the legendary Pee-wee and all his wild and wacky inspiration.”
San Antonio, of course, plays a pivotal role in the cult classic after a shady psychic convinces Pee-wee that his stolen bike can be found in the Alamo. Though he is laughed all the way to Sunset Station for asking "Where's the basement?," his red Schwinn did eventually make its way to the mission as part of the Ralston Family Collections.
The San Antonio Street Art event does not include a bike rally, but will make room for other fun. Food vendors will offer “retro snacks” and a DJ will spin “dance sounds mixed with nostalgic Pee Wee-esque magic.” Start practicing the “Tequila” dance.
Revelers can also take part in a Pee-wee’s Playhouse-themed costume contest, but planners warn it will be steamy. A Reba the Mail Lady fit probably won’t cause heat exhaustion, but be wary of cosplaying Chairry.
The Everybody’s Playhouse celebration coincides with the Spray it Forward donation drive supporting SASAI. Created by local artist and Gravelmouth Gallery founder Shek Vega, the organization supports local mural projects, fair-wage artist jobs, and public outdoor gallery space.
Its most ambitious project is the Largest Outdoor Gallery in Texas, a stretch of public art that spans downtown, the St. Mary's Strip, and the East Side, including the DREAM Mural Arts District.
