DON'T WEAR IT OUT
Pee-wee Herman's famous red Schwinn cruises back to the Alamo

Pee-wee Herman's bike — complete with tassles — is now part or the Alamo collection.
One of cinema history's most famous props is riding back into San Antonio. The Alamo Visitor Center and Museum has acquired one of the iconic Schwinn DX bikes used in the filming of Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
In the 1985 cult classic, bullying neighbor Francis Buxton hires a street tough to steal Herman's beloved red bike, launching a zany cross-country quest that famously lands him at the Alamo. Forty years later, Alamo tour guides say visitors still ask the movie's famous line, "Where's the basement?"
Now, one of the 14 bicycles from the film will have a permanent home in Alamo City. Purchased at auction for $125,000, the Schwinn will make its San Antonio debut later this year for the film's 40th anniversary. Fans can get an up-close look during a limited-time exhibit at the Ralston Family Collections Center, followed by a free public screening of Pee-wee's Big Adventure at Plaza de Valero.
After that, the bike will take its rightful place as a permanent exhibit in the Mays Family Legacy Gallery, part of the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum set to open in fall 2027.
More than 1.6 million people visit the Alamo each year to see historic artifacts like Santa Anna's uniform and Davy Crockett's rifle. But the addition of a beloved Hollywood prop is expected to attract an even broader crowd, especially given the re-examination of actor Paul Reubens' career following his 2023 death.
The museum will feature eight chronological galleries covering the Alamo's 300-year history, from its Indigenous and Spanish roots to the 1836 battle and beyond. The Mays Family Legacy Gallery will explore the Alamo's cultural influence, with Herman's bike displayed alongside film clips, music, toys, and memorabilia.
And while there has never been a basement under the historic Alamo church (sorry, Pee-wee), the new museum built along the western edge of the Alamo footprint will have one.
"We are thrilled to add this beloved piece of film history to our collection," said Dr. Kate Rogers, executive director of the Alamo Trust Inc., in a release. "The Alamo holds a special place in the hearts of people everywhere, and Pee-wee's Big Adventure helped to introduce a new generation to the historic site. This artifact perfectly illustrates how the Alamo lives on in pop culture, and soon visitors to Texas' top tourist destination will be able to see it up close in our new world-class museum."
