San Antonio Spurs dance team rebounds after 7-year break

The city may still be processing its Finals loss, but the San Antonio Spurs are giving locals a reason to get excited again. After a seven-year absence, the team is bringing back the iconic Silver Dancers for the 2026-27 NBA season.
The Spurs abruptly disbanded the all-woman squad in 2018, reportedly due to a lack of interest. But the decision was met with public scrutiny, with many questioning if it was a response to the #MeToo movement, then at its national peak.
Rosalyn Jones, who founded the Silver Dancers in 1991, took issue with that narrative. In a 2018 interview with the Washington Post, she said the choreographer had not received any complaints about the entertainment value of the team and defended their record of community involvement.
Whatever the reason, the Spurs replaced the crew with the co-ed Hype Squad, a move soon copied by other NBA franchises like the Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors.
Now, both the Hype Squad and the Silver Dancers will be pumping up crowds.
“We’re always looking for ways to make the Spurs game-day experience more exciting and engaging for our fans,” said Jordan Mandelkorn, Vice President of Marketing, Creative & Retail for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, in a release. “The Silver Dancers and Hype Squad each bring their own energy, skillset, and connection to our fans, and we’re excited to expand our entertainment lineup in a way that reflects the spirit of the Spurs both on the court and in the community.”
The Silver Dancers will make appearances at select home games and community events throughout the 2026-27 season. But the clock is ticking for those who want to step out onto the court. Submissions to join the dance team and the Hype Squad are only open through June 28.
