RE:Imagine Fest brings back San Antonio's beloved DIY music festival
The Black Angels will headline RE:Imagine Fest.
Maybe it’s the generally cranky populace or the rash of recent closures, but San Antonio’s cultural communities are feeling nostalgic for pre-pandemic times. Now, wistful locals are reviving Imagine Fest with a one-day event held November 28 at Pearl’s Stable Hall.
For city newcomers, Imagine Fest was a grassroots festival that ran from 2015-2019. Although it took advantage of national and international talent traveling to Texas for South by Southwest, it was just as much a showpiece for homegrown talent.
The multi-day shindig borrowed its name from Imagine Books & Records, once nicknamed the “Loudest Bookstore in Texas.” Former North East Independent School District English teacher Don Hurd and wife, Irma Hurd, opened the spot in 2011 with help from their sons, ultimately closing it in 2021 to enjoy more downtime.
Ezra Hurd (the couple’s son) and organizers Noah Slavin and Ezra Rodriguez decided to bring some of that magic back after reuniting earlier this year, dubbing the new event, appropriately, RE:Imagine Fest.
Although the headliner — Austin psych rock legends The Black Angels — is from out of town, the rest of the 10 acts on the lineup call Alamo City their home.
"Noah, Ezra R., and I are working together to share the spirit we had at Imagine with the next generation of musicians,” said Hurd in a release. “This is about supporting the local music scene and giving our talented artists a platform to share their work with new audiences across San Antonio and beyond."
The lineup includes:
Stable Hall Courtyard Stage
- Any Color You Like
- Shut Up Cicada
- Roshii
- Hydra Melody
- Lonely Horse
- Piñata Protest
Stable Hall Main Stage
- Killer Cats (from outerspace)
- Xenocten
- Postal
- Buffalo Farm
- Euphonia
- The Black Angels
The one-day festival will also include an art installation from TV Eye Media, a collective best known for their liquid light projections at Austin Psych Fest. Doors for RE:Imagine open at 3 pm, with the show starting at 4 pm. Tickets range from $30-$75 and are now on sale online.
