San Antonio Monarch Butterfly Festival flutters to Brackenridge Park

San Antonio's Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival returns October 18.
San Antonio's Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival is spreading its wings again in Brackenridge Park. The free event is celebrating its 10th anniversary on October 18 with a day of hands-on fun, education, and community engagement for Alamo City nature lovers.
The milestone year celebrates the notable migration of the monarch butterfly and the critical role pollinators play in our ecosystem. The festival started after San Antonio earned the distinction of being the first Monarch Butterfly Champion City in the U.S. after signing the Mayor's Monarch Pledge in 2015, an initiative to protect monarch butterflies and their habitats.
"San Antonio sits in the heart of the Texas (migratory) Funnel, welcoming billions of migrating animals each year — from monarch butterflies to ruby-throated hummingbirds and many more, making it critical for our community to support these vital species," Creative Director of the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival, Ashley Bird, explains in a statement. "Pollinators are a critical part of our ecosystem as they make 1 in every three bites of food possible!"

Over the past decade, the festival, presented by Blooming with Birdie and Project Bloom, has grown into a beloved tradition, drawing more than 10,000 attendees last year and expecting an even larger crowd in 2025. To celebrate, organizers are creating a fiesta-themed atmosphere, perfect for dressing up in butterfly, bird, or bat wings and joining the fun.
Festival activities scheduled from 9 am-2 pm range from face painting to adopting trees, giving attendees a chance to get hands-on with nature. Guests can tag a monarch butterfly's wing as part of an international citizen science project or take part in an interactive obstacle course where they can "metamorphosize" and go on their own migration journey.
New additions this year include Rave at the Cave, a playful silent disco celebrating bats and sound, and Pollinator Picnic, a game that gives families insight into the lives of pollinators. Attendees can also race through a caterpillar-themed playscape to reach the milkweed or search for native birds hiding among the cypress trees in the Bird Wing area.
Founded by Monika Maeckle of Texas Butterfly Ranch, the festival reflects San Antonio's commitment as a National Wildlife Federation Monarch Champion City, bringing together education, entertainment, and community in a celebration of pollinators and the ecosystems they support.
