HAPPY RETURNS
Shuttered kayak tour company paddles back onto the San Antonio River

Mission Kayak is back offering San Antonio River tours.
A go-to company for renting kayaks is paddling back into the San Antonio River. After a brief hiatus, Mission Kayak is once again offering tours of some of Alamo City’s most beautiful stretches.
The tour company closed in early March after owner Sarah Neal got an archivist job in another city. David Morin, the cofounder and majority owner from 2013-2017, decided to take the reins again because he had settled his family in San Antonio. Previously, he was based in Austin.
Morin says his main occupation as a multifamily real estate developer — plus his new proximity to the business — allowed him to reinvest in the business. He credits Neal’s “great stewardship” and notes she still lends her expertise to the company as a partner.
“I’m not doing Mission Kayak to make a lot of money,” Morin notes. “I’m doing it because it’s such a cool thing for the city.”
Morin’s interest in paddle sports began at an early age. As a Boy Scout, he would take frequent trips to Big Ben, the Guadalupe River, and the Texas Coast. With the rebirth of Mission Kayak, he hopes to bring the joy of outdoor recreation to local families while providing jobs for San Antonio youth.
Currently, Mission Kayak is offering tours down the King William section of the River Walk, but he is working with the city, the San Antonio River Authority, and river shuttle company Go Rio on new routes. The business hopes to offer a Pearl tour soon.
Although he couldn’t detail his exact plans yet, Morin teased that future plans will branch out to other rentals, unique social events, and “things you see in the world-class parks in the U.S. and Europe.”
Morin says Mission Kayak is planning a grand reopening party in late May or early June. For now, he is happy to once again offer a unique way for visitors and locals to experience San Antonio’s charms.
“I like the idea of being on the river,” he says. “I like experiencing San Antonio from the river. It’s the pulse of the city.”
Mission Kayak's King William route meets at 100 E. Guenther St. Prices range from $30 for a single adult kayak rental to $60 tandem kayak for two adults. Reservations are encouraged for the one-and-a-half hour tours, but walk-ins are accepted.
