JOYFUL NOISE
Free Make Music Day celebration blooms at San Antonio Botanical Garden

San Antonio Botanical Garden is taking part in 2025's Make Music Day.
San Antonio will soon get the chance to march to the beat of its own drum. The San Antonio Botanical Garden is joining the global Make Music Day celebrations on June 21. The free event promises tons of performances from local artists and the chance to join in on impromptu jam sessions.
According to a press release, a number of acts, including mariachi, brass bands, indie rock outfits, and saxophone ensembles, will be scattered throughout the gardens. The planners have already announced the Heart of Texas Concert Band, Alamo City Brass Collective, Mariachi Gallos de Oro, and Alamo City Dance Company. More acts will be added closer to the event.
Politician Jack Lang, then the Minister of Culture of France, founded Fête de la Musique in 1981 with composer and journalist Maurice Fleuret. The inaugural all-day musical celebration took place in Paris in 1982 and quickly drew international attention.
The festival is now one of the world's most joyous phenomena, simultaneously observed in 700 cities and 120 countries. It took on various names in English-speaking nations, including Music Day and World Music Day.
But Make Music Day, a title that reflects the DIY nature of the celebrations, stuck. The Make Music Alliance was formed in the United States in 2014 to help coordinate the massive effort of staging thousands of free concerts nationwide.
San Antonio joined in on the fun in 2024. According to the local Make Music website, the city will continue the clamor in 2025, but no specific details have been released. Last year's party drew fans to unexpected places like Hemisfair's Yanaguana Gardens and the San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
Preregistration is available now through the botanical garden. Guests can catch the joyful noise between 10 am-10 pm at 555 Funston Pl.
