VIRTUAL INSANITY
New San Antonio VR experience roams the ruins of Machu Picchu

Look, ma! It's an Andean condor.
If San Antonians don’t want to suffer through multiple layovers to get to Peru this summer, a new virtual reality experience is the next best thing. Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City will let locals wander through the famed Incan citadel in the air-conditioned comfort of downtown’s Shops at Rivercenter through June 28.
The 45-minute experience comes from Virtual Worlds, a global immersive tech studio. The company painstakingly mapped the monument through drone footage, rapid laser-pulsing LiDAR scans, and photogrammetry to create a millimeter-accurate version of the 15th-century mountain city.
Instead of sitting in a chair with a dorky headset, visitors will look dorky by physically roaming through the virtual world. The expedition gives access to parts of Machu Picchu that tourists never get near, such as sacred temples, plazas, and vantage points usually reserved for archaeologists.
Although much of the exhibit is rooted in reality, entertainment company Fever couldn’t help slipping a little showmanship in. Andean condors swoop overhead, and the experience crescendoes with a dramatic solar eclipse.
Real-world sightseers also don’t get to be guided by a cute robotic companion. TERI is voiced by actor Terry Crews, known for America’s Got Talent and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Perhaps that’s an odd choice for a jaunt through ancient South America, but he was probably easier to book than Inti, the Incan sun god.
The Machu Picchu experience is recommended for ages 10 and up, and groups are encouraged. Tickets, starting at $15.20, are available online.
