Los Lonely Boys, Todd Rundgren headline San Antonio unity concert
Los Lonely Boys are one of the headliners of American Revival.
Can music help mend a fractured nation? That’s the question behind American Revival, a traveling concert series headed to San Antonio’s Tobin Center on October 5. The live revue combines national headliners, local acts, and special guests in an attempt to spark community in each host city.
Filmmaker Nicholas Ma, Yo-Yo Ma’s son, created the roadshow after touring the U.S. with two documentaries: the Fred Rogers feature Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Leap of Faith, a film about pastors trying to bridge differences. Inspired by the audiences’ responses, he set out to build an event that asks people to show up for others and themselves.
As the name implies, the experience is akin to a secular tent revival. Musical performances alternate with conversation about bringing people together in an age of divisiveness, and the night ends symbolically with every artist onstage at once.
American Revival curates the lineup specifically for each city. In San Antonio, the big names include Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Todd Rundgren, Grammy-winning Texas brothers Los Lonely Boys, and Arrested Development — known for hits like “Mr. Wendal” and “Tennessee.”
They’ll share the stage with local talent such as Lisa Morales, Daniel Anastasio, Mariachi Los Galleros de San Antonio, Valerie June, and Larisa Martínez. Iconic actress Alfre Woodard will also participate in the revue.
The show will also have a service component called A Festival of Helpers. Before and after the performances, San Antonio community partners will show attendees ways to get involved locally.
A release did not mention which partners were participating in the San Antonio show. Doors open at 6 pm, and the show starts at 7 pm. Tickets start at $43.50, including fees, and are available online or by calling (210) 223-8624.
