9 free and cheap things to do in San Antonio this summer

San Antonio is filled with free splashpads.
With longer days, kids out of school, and uninspired streaming releases, it's easy to get squirrely during a San Antonio summer. Luckily, Alamo City locals have no shortage of things to do without breaking the bank. Whether looking for family-friendly fun, educational opportunities, art projects, or fitness, these budget-friendly summer activities will keep vacation season more woohoo than humdrum.
Get moving at Brackenridge Park
The Brackenridge Park Conservancy and fitness nonprofit San Antonio Sports will get locals' hearts pumping with Monday yoga classes, Wednesday boot camps, and Saturday Pilates sessions. The free workouts are designed for all ages and levels, but Pilates participants should bring their own mat, towel, and water.
If the kids are bouncing off the walls during summer break, parkour sessions for ages 7-12 are an affordable way to blow off steam. The weekly sessions are offered from 9 am-noon, Mondays-Thursdays. Passes are $199 for the week or $60 for individual days.
Expand horizons at San Antonio Parks
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is the hub of summer activities for local youth. Younger kids can register for camp activities, including sports and games, arts and crafts, and STEM classes. Participants can also explore fantastical worlds through the San Antonio Public Library's Summer Reading Program.
Older kids can stay busy by enrolling in the Summer Teen Club, providing teenagers ages 13-18 with esports, fine arts, volunteer opportunities, and more. Register here for more information. Shop 'til you drop
Pearl's summer night markets are packed with tasty treatsand artisan goods from local vendors — including special handmade goods from crafty child entrepreneurs. But no purchase is necessary to sway along to live music or frolic in the splash pad. Markets are open from 5-9 pm every third Thursday.
Express yourself
Raising a budding Steven Spielberg or Pablo Picasso? Blackbox Music and Arts offers youngsters a chance to learn how to create a movie, make music, or produce a work of art. Age-appropriate classes are offered in weekly and longer sessions, with no prior experience necessary. Weekly tuition fees range from $150-$375. Register here.
Get starstruck
Mission Marquee Plaza on San Antonio's South Side is the place to be for magical summer nights filled with nostalgic movies like Rocky, Twister, and The Goonies. Free film showings begin 15 minutes after sunset on every first and third Saturday night, as well as June 19, July 17, and August 14. Guests are encouraged to bring their own blanket and lawn chair or picnic supplies. Food trucks and vendors will be on-site during the pet-friendly screenings.
Kick it with friends
Expand your social circle by enrolling in a summer kickball league at Brackenridge Park. It's open to coed teams with players ages 13 and up and to participants of all levels. Make a splash
There are tons of public places around town where anyone can seek relief from the heat. The splash pad at Hemisfair's Yanaguana Garden is open from 9 am-9 pm daily until October. Visitors have access to private changing rooms, large umbrellas for shade, and comfy Adirondack chairs. The splash pad at Pearsall Park on the Southwest Side is open 9 am-9 pm daily through October. The city of San Antonio also operates more than 20 pools, with varying hours of operation, through the summer. All pools and splashpads are free.
Soak in some history
Be a tourist in your own city by trekking through the four Spanish colonial mission sites that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park on the South Side. This includes the historic aqueduct and former ranch at Mission Espada. Ranger-led tours kick off at 10 am and 11 am daily at Mission San Jose, except for the first Wednesday of each month. Each mission also features an active Catholic church that is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm daily, except for special private functions. Admission is complimentary.
Catch a morning matinee
Santikos Entertainment presents free family-friendly movies at 10 am each Tuesday and Wednesday in June and July. All tickets are first come, first served and are made available only on the morning of each screening. This summer's slate of films includes Minions: The Rise of Gru, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, The Bad Guys, and The Wild Robot.
