New dine-in movie theater and microbrewery premieres on San Antonio’s Far West Side
Flix Brewhouse — whose dine-in theaters feature a mix of movies and microbrewery beers — has tapped the Far West Side for its first location in San Antonio.
Greg Johnson, director of sales and marketing at Round Rock-based Flix Brewhouse, says construction is underway on the company’s first San Antonio theater, which is set to open early next year on West Loop 1604 just south of Potranco Road. The theater will be next to the Shops at Dove Creek.
Johnson says the new Flix Brewhouse will couple the growing craft-beer scene in San Antonio with the company’s unique moviegoing concept.
“The West Side of San Antonio presents a great opportunity for an out-of-home entertainment concept like Flix,” Johnson says. “With the residential growth, an excellent [retail] center being developed adjacent to Flix, and the robust cinema market in San Antonio, it created a perfect situation to expand the Flix brand deeper into Central Texas.”
The roughly 40,000-square-foot theater will offer nine movie screens; the luxury stadium-style seating will accommodate close to 900 moviegoers. It will be the chain’s ninth location.
Flix Brewhouse says it’s the only theater operator showing first-run movies in spaces that include a full-fledged microbrewery.
At the San Antonio theater, Flix Brewhouse will serve 12 to 14 of its own beers at any given time, as well as about two dozen beers from local and regional breweries, Johnson says. The microbrewery’s indoor and outdoor areas collectively will seat well over 100 people. On the food menu will be items like pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, wraps, appetizers, and desserts.
The theater’s Flix Mix lobby bar and café will be open to the public — no movie ticket required.
Elsewhere in Texas, Flix Brewhouse operates theaters in Round Rock, where it opened its first location in 2011, and in El Paso and Frisco. Outside the state, theaters are located in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Carmel, Indiana; Chandler, Arizona; Des Moines, Iowa; and Madison, Wisconsin. Flix Brewhouse theaters also are planned for Mansfield, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb; Hutto, an Austin suburb; and Oklahoma City.
