9 brilliant ways to celebrate San Antonio Pride all June
First, some disappointing news: Unfortunately, pearls are still being clutched over the rainbow merchandise at Target and Walmart. Colorful rompers still trigger nature’s drabbest snowflakes.
Never mind. Corporations have never been a wellspring of queer joy, however empowering it has been to see society catch up with LGBTQIA-humanity. This year, while Facebook miserable scolds type nonsense in social media comments, remember you have better things to do. These nine San Antonio Pride events — all steeped in community — are just a starter.
Queer Voices Pachanga
With an annual event that includes fashion, burlesque, and spirituality, the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center is kicking off the month. The free pachanga — a multifaceted celebration of queerness held June 1 from 4-10 pm — starts with a gender-affirming clothing swap followed by blessings from Cuir Curandera. Then a coterie of poets, drag performers, live musicians, and burlesque artists will add even more sizzle.
Drag Me to the Hall
Rhinestones, big hair, gowns to the floor. RuPaul’s Drag Race lip-sync assassin headlines Stable Hall’s first Pride spectacular on June 1. DJ Catwalk will keep the cue up the earworms with support from some of San Antonio’s fiercest drag artists. The beats drop at 9 pm.
Pride Pop Stars Candle Making Experience
Wax has mangled everyone from Arianna Grande to Beyoncé. It’s time for crafty bitches to take the medium back. From June 1-15, Mission Crafts Chandlery is breaking out the gems and glitter for a series of workshops honoring the divas of pop. A portion of the proceeds go to Thrive Youth Center.
The Boys in the Band
This Pre-Stonewall classic, derided by some as a self-loathing chamber piece, still has legs as a seminal portrait of midcentury gay life. Though the last few decades of liberation have made the play’s message less urgent, it still serves as a reminder of why the battle was fought. Catch it at the Classic Theatre of San Antonio’s San Pedro Playhouse between June 6-23.
Boerne Pride Walk
Visibility is as important in the ‘burbs as it is in the big city. Show up and show out at the PHPL Amphitheatre between 9 am and noon on June 8. Vendor and resource booths will be on hand to educate the children.
Pride on the Eastside Festival Festival
This annual block party at the Ella Austin Community Center, a joint production of Thrive Youth Center, WestCare Texas, and Black, Queer & Here, features delicious food, drag performances, and live music. Drop in between 4-8:30 pm on June 8.
Pride Night at Culture Commons Gallery
The theme of this artsy confab — “Resilient and Responsive: Artists and the Environment” — echoes the green used in Gilbert Baker’s original Pride flag. On the bill of this June 13 event is performances from Latine drag kings Sir Gio and Gacho Marx, readings from LGBTQIA+ poets, and a printmaking workshop from Ernesto Olivio.
Pride Hike
Shimmy into your hottest cut-offs and strut through Phil Hardberger Park. This two-hour hike celebrates nature’s diversity and is open to all families and ages. The get-together starts at 9 am on June 15 and includes an optional scavenger hunt.
Out at the Tobin Pride Brunch
Yes, a few sequins might wind up in your eggs Benedict, but who really eats at a drag brunch anyway? This one features Ra’Jah O’Hara, the first winner of Canada's Drag Race: Canada vs. the World, and local greats Kristi Waters, Reign Larue, and Mehgan Iman Dlux. Part of the proceeds from the June 23 party help the Thrive Youth Center.
