Futuristic indoor farm sprouts in San Antonio's Southeast Side
With its robotic equipment, blinding lights, and rows of security fencing, a Soli Organic farm looks like it could be a set piece for Fallout, the popular video game-cum-Amazon series set in postapocalyptic America. But its latest facility promises a far more comforting future for San Antonio.
On June 5, Soli introduced its latest indoor farm in the Brooks development. The mammoth 140,000-square-foot space includes 100,000 square feet — about the size of a Manhattan city block — of vertical production room, and 40,000 square feet set aside for production and packing.
The futuristic farm will produce a variety of organic leafy greens, from common herbs like basil and mint to salad staples like arugula, spinach, and romaine. Though grown in soil, Soli uses ultramodern lighting, automation, and fertigation (a technique to deliver fertilizer through irrigation) to create maximum yields.
According to the company, the method has many ecological benefits over traditional farming. Using 1/100th of the land traditionally used for similar harvests, the design enables Soli to use 90-percent less water. And, of course, indoor fields are not susceptible to San Antonio’s famously testy weather.
Having a facility in San Antonio will also increase the quality of the food Soli sells to area retailers, cutting down the mileage the crops must travel. The result is lower costs and tastier, fresher greens.
“In today’s economy, consumers want value, and that’s what our new San Antonio facility is designed to deliver,” said Matt Ryan, Soli Organic’s chief executive officer, via a release. “This high-tech farm will offer retailers and consumers fresh, organic produce grown here in Texas and is already delivering our best yields yet in a state known for the biggest and best of everything.”
The Brooks complex will also reap more than 100 jobs, many of them high-wage, high-skill tech positions. Soli promises to offer diverse career paths to contribute to the overall health of the community.
“The introduction of Soli Organic’s facility marks a new chapter in our history of fostering innovation and sustainable initiatives,” says Brooks Community president and CEO Leo Gomez "Soli Organic’s presence reinforces our ag-tech leadership, stimulates economic development in Southeast San Antonio and improves the quality of life for the Brooks region.”
