SUDDEN SHUTTERS
San Antonio Halloween shop closing after 12 spooky seasons

San Antonio's only locally owned Halloween shop is suffering an untimely end after 12 years in business. Hocus Pocus at 8507 McCullough Ave #D-5 will close in early November due to increasing pressure from tariffs and competition from big-box retailers like Spirit Halloween.
The ownership team — Michael Tellez, Josh Saunders, Lynn Saunders, and Savannah Saunders — announced the imminent shutter in a frank blog post, saying the decision was made with "heavy hearts."
"Like many independent, local businesses, especially veteran-owned ones, we've faced an increasingly challenging landscape," wrote the owners. "The overwhelming presence of large Halloween chains that get in the Halloween Spirit by setting up shops next to ours. Then there's the growing burden of tariffs on our unique and quality inventory, and the unpredictable economic climate have all combined to make it unsustainable to continue delivering the high-quality, personal Halloween experience you know and love."
Hocus Pocus offered a local homegrown alternative to the ubiquitous Spirit, selling spooky decor, animatronics, pet costumes, and masks. Like the corporate goliath, it would frequently change locations. It currently operates near North Star Mall. As the owners alluded, Spirit was never eager to cede territory — operating a store across the highway at 25 NE 410 Loop.
Although the merchandise was similar, Hocus Pocus takes pride in its customer relationships. The frequently updated blog gives advice on how to create memorable costumes, styling tips, and the latest trends. It would frequently hold sales for its more budget-conscious customers.
"Our greatest joy, our most cherished memories, and the true heart and soul of Hocus Pocus has always been our amazing community," the owners continued. "We've loved every moment spent helping you find that perfect pirate hat, the most enchanting fairy wings, or the scariest monster mask. Witnessing your excitement, seeing your faces light up, and receiving the incredible photos of your Halloween adventures has been our greatest reward."
Although the owners said the closure will happen after Halloween on October 31, they did not give an exact date. There's no word if there will be a final close-out sale.
