Meatballs for everyone!
Ikea hits major milestone towards opening first San Antonio-area store
Ikea, everyone's favorite DIY furniture store/Swedish meatball distributor, has announced a target opening date for its first San Antonio store. In a press release, the Swedish retailer said it has secured a contractor for the new 289,000-square-foot building, and will break ground on the project next spring.
Like most Ikea outposts, the new store will be located about 15 miles from the city center, in Live Oak. Heading up construction will be Tribble & Stephens, an Austin-based construction firm tasked with keeping the project on its projected timeline of a summer 2019 opening.
“With contractors on board, plans can proceed towards opening the future Ikea Live Oak store,” said Lars Petersson, Ikea U.S. president, in a release. “This San Antonio-area store will provide a more convenient Ikea shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout South Texas who may live too far from Ikea Houston and Ikea Round Rock.”
Customers can expect the same shopping experience as other Ikea outposts, including expansive showrooms, an in-store restaurant, and a play area where you can drop your children off while you shop for a 500-pack of tealights in peace.
Once the new store is open, Ikea says it plans to bring about 250 jobs to the San Antonio area. The Live Oak location will be the fifth store in the Lone Star State.
