Homegrown San Antonio grocery store bags spot among best places to work in 2019

H-E-B is one of the best companies to work for in 2019.

San Antonio's H-E-B has rung up its share of awards, nabbing everything from best supermarket to nation's biggest retailers. For 2018, the hometown grocery is adding another superlative: best place to work.

Employee review company Glassdoor released its 11th annual Employee's Choice 100 Best Places to Work in 2019, a ranking of the best companies to work for across North America and parts of Europe, as chosen by the people who work there. H-E-B, which is headquartered on Flores Street in downtown San Antonio, ranked No. 31 on the list.

To determine the winners, Glassdoor reviewed anonymous feedback from current and former employee across six categories, including the nearly 3,000 reviews about H-E-B. It then divided those companies into large (more than 1,000 employees) and small/medium (less than 1,000 employees). Overall, the grocery chain ranked 4.4 out of 5 possible stars.

“In today’s tight labor market, job seekers are in the driver’s seat when it comes to deciding where to work and they want to know the inner workings of a company before accepting a new job," said Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor's chief economist, in a release. "For employers, we know that a satisfied and engaged workforce helps drive financial performance. Glassdoor Best Places to Work winners are strategically investing in company culture, career growth opportunities, and more, which also serves as a major recruiting advantage."

Despite landing in the top 100, the No. 31 spot is the company's lowest since it debuted on the list in 2014 at No. 27. H-E-B's previous rankings were 20th (2018), 27th (2017), 17th (2016), and 7th (2015).

Though H-E-B was the only San Antonio-based company to make the 100 Best Places to Work in 2019, 14 other companies with offices in San Antonio also appeared on the list:

Students of families making under $100,000 will get free tuition to UT

This is an extension of a previous program with a lower income eligibility.

Beginning next fall, some students accepted into schools within the University of Texas system will receive free tuition and have all fees waived, the board of regents announced on Wednesday.

In order to qualify, families of undergraduates must make less than $100,000 a year.

The board gave preliminary approval to the plan on Wednesday. After the full board’s consideration and vote on Thursday, the plan will include a new, immediate infusion of $35 million directly to campuses to offer the financial aid benefit. The plan also directs additional investment in endowments supporting financial aid to ensure a commitment for tuition relief.

In 2019, the regents established a $167 million endowment at UT Austin to completely cover tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduate students from families with an income of up to $65,000. In 2022, the regents approved a second endowment of almost $300 million called “Promise Plus” to extend the program to all UT academic institutions.

“To be in a position to make sure our students can attend a UT institution without accruing more debt is very important to all of us [...]” Kevin P. Eltife, chairman of the board of regents, said.
