Never to Early
Who cares if Fiesta is six months away? We're already ironing our sashes and staking out the optimal parade seat. It appears Fiesta is also on the minds of executives at Big Red, who are pinning their hopes on San Antonians to once again create the company's next Fiesta medal.
On October 1, Big Red announced its third annual Fiesta San Antonio Medal Design Contest, a campaign where local residents can prove their mettle at designing — forgive us — medals.
The contest, which runs now through October 31, is open to San Antonio residents or those living within a 45-minute radius of the city. There are a series of design guidelines (no more than five colors, no gradients) as well as no-nos such as copyrighted or offensive materials.
"Big Red is looking for contestants to bring their inspiring and creative interpretations of Big Red, San Antonio's vibrant, deep-rooted family culture, and Fiesta's celebration to their medal designs," the company said in a release.
Once complete, the medal design must be uploaded to the Big Red site, where people can vote for the winning design now through November 5. The top three then advance to the final round, where the winner will be selected by a committee of Fiesta medal experts (kidding, it's the sponsors). The lucky artist will be notified by November 9.
Sadly, the winner does not get Big Red for life, which was our suggestion for an appropriate prize. Instead, the design will become Big Red's official medal for Fiesta 2019, which returns to San Antonio April 18-28, 2019.
"We are thrilled to give our passionate fans a chance to design the official 2019 Fiesta Medal," says Thomas Oh, senior vice president of marketing for Big Red, in a release. "Texans have a longstanding passion for Big Red and getting involved in Fiesta further connects us with the great people and city of San Antonio."
And those with a longstanding passion for Fiesta medals can nab Big Red's closer to the festival. According to a release, the company will make the medals available via its social media channels during the 10-day extravaganza.
