Fun in the Sun for All
Inspiring San Antonio attraction splashes into TIME's World's Greatest Places 2018
A splashy San Antonio attraction is making waves as one of TIME's World's Greatest Places 2018. On August 23, the magazine announced its picks for the 100 greatest places on earth, and Morgan's Inspiration Island is among the winners.
Morgan's Inspiration Island opened in 2017 as a destination for people with all abilities. The water park is designed to accommodate everything from sensory issues to service animals, while providing waterproof chairs, adult diapers, and other needs often overlooked by traditional play spaces.
"The words ultra-accessible guided the park’s design, from wheelchairs that are waterproof and powered by compressed air to water areas that are set to different temperatures, for those who can’t handle the cold," writes TIME's Kate Rockwood. "'Everybody can join together in play,' says [owner Gordon] Hartman, noting that many parkgoers don’t have special needs at all."
Located near Uptown, the water park is just one feature of Morgan's Wonderland, the world's first accessible family amusement park. The 25-acre park, formerly a limestone quarry, now houses 25 accessible amusements, restaurants, and games all crafted for a day of fun in the sun.
To determine the World's Greatest Places, TIME editors sifted through more than 1,200 nominations to find destination spots that are "breaking new ground, leading industry trends, and offering visitors an extraordinary experience."
Morgan's Inspiration Island joins international hot spots such as Vietnam's Golden Bridge, Barcelona's Casa Vicens, and South Africa's Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa on the prestigious list. Austin Central Library, the city's brand-new downtown library, also garnered a top spot.
