San Antonio landmark vies for national award — and your vote counts
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is in the running for some big bucks, but it needs your help to secure the cash.
As part of the 2016 Partners in Preservation: National Parks campaign, a joint venture with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express, 20 national parks are vying for funds to maintain important historical sites. A $2 million grant has been set aside for the proposed projects, which will be divvied up among the parks that garner the most votes through National Geographic's online platform.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is asking for $236,000 to help restore the frescoes at Mission Concepción and maintain fragile features in the Father President's office and convent. The other 19 projects range from an overlook at Yellowstone to a visitor's center in the Everglades.
Each park received a $10,000 grant to "increase public awareness about the historic structures." Additionally, the National Park service awarded $29,120 to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park for maintenance at Mission San Juan earlier this year, which was matched with $25,000 from the San Antonio Conservation Society.
If you want to help our local historical gem earn even more funding, cast your vote. Sign up through National Geographic and you can vote once a day for San Antonio Missions National Historical Park through July 5. You can share your vote and help spread awareness of the campaign by using the hashtag #VoteYourPark on social media.
