Bidi Bidi Beautiful
Beloved beauty brand debuts Selena-inspired makeup collection
After a year of development, MAC Cosmetics' new line of makeup inspired by Tejano star Selena is debuting. The collection, available October 1, was curated by Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga, and celebrates the iconic style of the Latin legend.
The collection includes five eye shadows ranging from bright purple to light pink ($17 each), three lipsticks ($18), mascara ($18), liquid eyeliner ($21), a two-tone blush/bronzer ($29), and a powder/blush brush ($35). All of the pieces are named after Selena song titles: There's the Como La Flor bright-red lipstick and the Bidi Bidi Bom Bom pink "lipglass," available online only for $17.
"This is based on her personal makeup that she had and wore. We saved everything and matched colors to her exact makeup," said Arriaga in a MAC interview. And, as the star often wore different makeup during the day than she did during a performance, the line offers different looks.
"You don't realize from the outside how much goes into it. The process of picking the colors and textures — I wanted this to be about Selena and not about me," said Arriaga. "I wanted to make sure that it was true to what she would wear, and I feel like the colors and tones are perfect and represent her perfectly."
A petition for a Selena-inspired makeup line spurred MAC to reach out to the late star's family to collaborate on a collection.
"I think Selena would be super surprised and ecstatic to have MAC come knocking at the door. She would be over the moon about this," said Arriaga. "It shows the love that her fans have and that her music and legacy still lives on and has grown tremendously since she passed."
The Selena line will debut during a free event in Corpus Christi on September 30. The collection launches online October 1, and products will roll out to stores October 6-November 17.
