Cruzar la Cara de la Luna at Houston Grand Opera, May 17-20
The world's first mariachi opera returns, telling a timely story of an immigrant family divided by the U.S./Mexico border that has earned raves from critics and audiences worldwide. Originally an HGO commission, the opera — by José "Pepe" Martinez and Leondard Foglia — includes a vibrant mariachi score performed by the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Los Camperos ensemble.
The story of three generations shifts between the past and the present, Mexico and Texas, Spanish and English, as a Mexican-American man questions his own place in the world while straddling two cultures. As he faces his immigrant father's mortality and discovers long-buried secrets, he finds himself dramatically re-evaluating his own understanding of what makes a family.
