Basement tiki bar waves white flag after a year in New Braunfels

Uncharted Tiki Bar has closed after a brief one-year run.
The luau is over at New Braunfels Uncharted Tiki Bar. The island-themed basement haunt beneath The Phoenix Saloon at 193 W San Antonio St. has closed after a brief run.
“FYI y’all, the Uncharted Tiki Bar at the Phoenix Saloon has closed,” wrote the business on Facebook. “The intention was always to give it a year and then reevaluate. After much soul searching, we have decided to go in a different direction.”
Phoenix Saloon owner Ross Fortune teamed up with Jason Straughan to open the tropical speakeasy-style bar in December 2024. Taking cues from his own home bar, Straughan designed and built most of the fittings.
The vibe was a departure from the upstairs saloon, where guests were more likely to hear a mandolin than a ukulele. The spot combined familiar nautical touches like buoys and ship figureheads with thatching, batiks, and island kitsch.
The bar drafted a tiki heavyweight to mix up the cocktail menu. Russell Theode of Houston’s acclaimed Lei Low Bar collaborated with Straugn on offerings that included homages to the legendary tiki bars and originals like the signature Uncharted, a mix of rums, coconut, brandy, apricot, and lemon.
Despite the parting of ways with Phoenix, it doesn’t appear that Uncharted has waved the white flag just yet. In an Instagram post, the business characterized the closing as temporary, saying it will update fans on a new location. Fortune, for his part, has not yet revealed the next plans for the space, but promised it would also eventually reopen.
“We look forward to sharing what’s coming next very soon,” wrote Phoenix. “Watch this space!”
