3 San Antonio restaurants land on upstart top Texas barbecue list
2M Smokehouse was No. 14 on Texas Barbecue's Top 50 list
In Texas, barbecue is as hotly debated a topic as whether bluebonnets can be picked. Now, upstart media outlet Texas Barbecue Online Magazine is bucking against Texas Monthly’s revered 50 Best Barbecue Joints list by releasing its own rankings, vaulting three San Antonio-area spots onto the honor roll.
Seguin’s Burnt Bean Co., named the best barbecue joint in the state by Texas Monthly Barbecue Editor Daniel Vaughn, kept a top 10 berth with a No. 3 spot. 2M Smokehouse (No. 14) and Double A’s BBQ (No. 27) also made the list, which seemed to favor small-town Texas tradition over the new-generation pitmasters at Lockhart’s Barbs B Q and San Antonio’s own Reese Bros Barbecue.
Case in point was the No. 1 pick, Belton’s Schoepf’s BBQ. In 2025, Texas Monthly gave the stalwart an Honorable Mention, praising its “best brisket ever” in a one-sentence review. Texas Barbecue’s write-up was near rhapsodic, calling it a “soul-stirring experience.”
What barbecue list one chooses to rely on probably has a little to do with one’s tolerance for Texas’ arbiters of taste. Vaughn has been producing the Texas Monthly list since 2013, previously making his name through a Twitter account, @BBQSnob.
In contrast, Texas Barbecue has only been ranking spots since 2022, when it produced its inaugural top 25 list. It says its leaderboard was created by 100 volunteer judges, who scored hundreds of spots across the state. Boldly, it proclaimed its slate as “Texas Barbecue Independence Day.”
“This list represents a new era in Texas barbecue recognition, built on merit, craftsmanship, consistency, and the quality of the cook,” wrote Texas Barbecue owner Derik Strelsky. “No outside influence. No agendas. Just fire, smoke, meat, and the men and women who dedicate their lives to mastering it.”
If barbecue fanatics want to know what to order, Vaughn delivers the goods, riffing on specific seasonings, the rendering of fat, and the texture of accompaniments. Strelsky mostly writes in generalities, rarely mentioning sides and sometimes not recommending any specific dishes.
Still, in a state where barbecue debates burn brighter than Friday night lights, Texas Barbecue keeps the online chatter going — at least until Vaughn publishes his next top 50 list in 2029.
