COMING ATTRACTIONS
Terry Black's Barbecue inches closer to opening in New Braunfels

Terry Black's Barbecue hopes to wrap up construction in new Braunfels in summer 2026.
Celebrated Austin chain Terry Black’s Barbecue is inching closer to its New Braunfels debut. New Texas project filings reveal that renovations at 1310 E. Common St., the former home of Los Cucos, are slated to wrap up in late August 2026.
Although the barbecue joint had previously confirmed the opening, the Texas Department of Licensing Regulation project details are the first hint of what’s in store. The $5 million, 8,649-square-foot restaurant aims to begin construction in early 2026.
Brother Michael and Mark Black founded the concept in Austin in 2014, carrying on the tradition of their grandfather, Edgar Black Sr., the creator of Black’s BBQ in Lockhart. The offshoot spurred one of barbecue’s biggest beefs, with their uncle, Kent Black, sending them a cease-and-desist for using the family name.
Blacks BBQ opened its own New Braunfels outpost in the summer of 2018. The restaurant is located just a few minutes walk from the planned Terry Black’s. Awkward.
Potential squabbling aside, Terry Black’s opening will be a boon for Hill Country foodies. The chain sticks to old-school Central Texas smoking, serving meats-by-the-pound like brisket, beef ribs, turkey, and sausage. Sides include classics like coleslaw, mac ‘n’ cheese, cream corn, and banana pudding.
“I think the thing that really sets our family apart is that we take pride in every product we put out there,” said Mark Black in an earlier release. “You don’t come in here and get a set plate of food. You can order a slice of brisket, a rib, and a sausage link all at once to get a taste of each unique menu item, perfected after several hours of smoking and preparation.”
Terry Black’s is making inroads down the Interstate 35 corridor. In 2021, the family-owned chain bought a plot on 2101 Broadway in San Antonio with plans to build two restaurants and a hotel. No set timeline has been announced for that project’s debut.
