Acclaimed San Antonio taquería seeks help weathering icy January

Tacopolis is facing a rough January.
One of San Antonio’s most promising new restaurants is facing a rocky start to 2026. Tacopolis at 1604 Fredericksburg Rd. in the Deco District is hosting a Make Rent Event Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, to bounce back from flagging sales.
“It’s been a really hard month for us,” wrote the restaurant in a candid Instagram caption. “With all the ICE patrols up and down our street, extreme weather, and an overall slow month, we are going to need some help.”
First opened in July 2025, Tacopolis marked the return of Chef Alejandro Paredes to San Antonio’s dining scene. Paredes has largely been out of the public eye since December 2023, when he made the shocking decision to close Carnitas Lonja and sibling restaurant Fish Lonja. At the time. Both were widely considered among San Antonio’s best restaurants, earning accolades from the James Beard Foundation, Esquire magazine, Eater, and the New York Times.
Tacopolis equally got off to an auspicious start. San Antonio Express-News food critic Mike Sutter praised the joint’s tacos in his September 2025 roundup of the best things he ate the previous month. The CultureMap team shared in the admiration, naming the taquería one of the 11 best new restaurants of 2025 and singling out the champignon quesadilla as one of the best dishes of the year.
The small restaurant specializes in tacos and quesadillas stuffed with pollo, chorizo, carne asada, birria, chuleta (pork chop), or champiñón (mushroom). But it’s offering a few off-menu items for the make-rent promo, including a loaded baked potato with a drink for $10 and a Mexican corn cup for $5. Guests can also take advantage of a four tacos for $15 deal.
On Friday and Saturday, Tacopolis will be open 9 am-2 pm for lunch and 5 pm-8 pm for dinner. The specials will only be available in the dinner service until sell out.
