OPENING ALERT
San Antonio pizza favorite opens first New Braunfels restaurant

Sofia's Pizzeria has opened its first restaurant in New Braunfels.
San Antonio’s go-to for a New York slice has officially crossed over into the Hill Country. Sofia’s Pizzeria recently opened its first New Braunfels restaurant, taking over the former Big Bib BBQ spot at 508 Landa St. near the historic main square.
Owner Alan White, a former restaurant consultant and franchise owner, launched Sofia’s on Portranco Road in 2019, naming the new concept after his daughter. Since then, he has grown the business by opening two other outposts on Evans and Bitters Roads.
The pies use New York-style crusts, but many of the flavors are pure San Antonio. In addition to classic cheese and supreme pizzas, Sofia’s serves originals like The Fiesta with chorizo, a barbecue chicken pie, and clever cream cheese, jalapeño, and Canadian bacon option inspired by poppers.
Beyond the pizza, Sofia’s dishes out sides like wings, garlic knots, and salads. The sandwiches range from subs like chicken parm to box lunches served on focaccia, and the pasta covers Italian-American classics like lasagna and fettuccine Alfredo.
Besides serving reliable meals, the restaurant has endeared itself to the San Antonio community by supporting local children’s charities. Through its "Pies for Kids Program," a portion of the proceeds from every 18-inch pizza sold goes to area youth nonprofits.
It’s not clear when Big Bib BBQ closed its New Braunfels location, but it's still smoking meats at 104 Lanark Dr. in San Antonio. But White might have had the inside track on the building’s availability. He has worked with Big Bib in the past to create a “Texas Twinkie” rodeo special featuring pizza dough, jalapeños, cream cheese, and the barbecue joint’s signature brisket.
Sofia's New Braunfels is currently open from 11 am-4 pm daily, according to an Instagram post.
