OPENING ALERT
Slim Chickens spreads its wings on San Antonio's Far West Side

Slim Chickens is bulking up with a new San Antonio location.
Booming fast-casual chain Slim Chickens is continuing its steady march across San Antonio. The chicken tender specialist added a new San Antonio location at 14583 Potranco Rd. on January 15, its second outpost on the quickly growing Far West Side.
The new location is the third area restaurant for Big Star Chicken LLC, the multi-unit operator behind the brand’s expansion in San Antonio and Austin. The franchise operator plans to open up to 20 locations across the two markets, but has not yet released details on timing or location.
“San Antonio continues to be a great market for Slim Chickens, and our seventh opening in the area marks another important milestone for our team,” says Dan McGrath, president of Big Star, in a release.
Slim Chickens is known for its hand-breaded chicken tenders, which the chain uses in salads, wraps, and mac ‘n’ cheese bowls. Diners can also expect wings, chicken and waffles, chicken sandwiches, and sweets like shakes or trifle-like jar desserts. All (but preferably not the jars) can be slathered with a lineup of 14 house-made sauces, ranging from mango habanero to ranch.
The Potranco Road opening adds to the Arkansas-based franchise’s expanding global presence. The brand now operates more than 330 locations worldwide, with restaurants across the United States as well as international markets. More than 1,000 additional locations are currently in development, but San Antonio currently only has three.
Slim Chicken’s growth continues with an explosion of fried chicken chains across the area — a trend that is reflected nationwide. Brands like Layne’s Chicken Fingers, Urban Bird, and Dave’s Hot Chicken are jostling to bite into the San Antonio Market, while operations like Chicken Ranch and Honey’s Chicken Joint are bringing local flavor to the genre.
