COMING ATTRACTIONS
Fruity açai bowl chain whirls into Cibolo with first shop

is headed to Cibolo.
As San Antonio’s suburbs continue to grow, a healthy snack chain is jumping in to take advantage of the boom. New Jersey-based Playa Bowls is opening its first Cibolo shop at 513 Cibolo Valley Dr. in late 2026.
The chain first teased an area expansion in a summer 2024 release, announcing the signing of several nationwide franchise deals. It’s unclear if Linda and Lou Crerand, the local duo behind the Boerne outpost, were involved in the newest store.
The fruity franchise was founded in 2014 by a pair of surfers who became enamored by the açai and pitaya bowls they found in Hawaii. The first location was in Belmar, New Jersey, perhaps not everyone’s idea of a tropical paradise, but it does have a beach.
Similar to local concepts like Rise Up, the chain specializes in tropical bowls, serving more than 40 options built from seven purees: açai, pitaya, coconut, kale, banana, oatmeal, and mango. Each can be topped with add-ons such as fresh and dried fruit, nuts, granola, and nut butter.
With so much fruit in the walk-in, the chain also makes plenty of smoothies. The more than a dozen options include blends amped up with chocolate protein, peanut butter, and wheat grass powder. All use plant-based milks like oat or coconut.
Other sippers include juice blends with beachy names like Endless Summer, Mermaid Fuel, and Dawn Patrol. Grab-and-go cold-press juices and chicory cold brews round off the offerings.
Playa Bowls has not released any details on the opening timeline. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation listing says construction on the Cibolo Bend Shopping Center location will end in September, but state filings are subject to change.
