SUDDEN SHUTTERS
Upscale San Antonio Mexican restaurant mysteriously closes after 2 years

Palomar Comida & Cantina has quietly shuttered to make way for a new restaurant.
San Antonio Tex-Mex upstart Palomar Comida & Cantina has quietly closed, but locals may need Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine to figure out the rest of the plotline. Signage for a new concept called Mezcal Comida Cantina has appeared on the 12656 West Ave building, but whether it's a rebrand or an entirely new restaurant is still unclear.
The Google business account for Palomar lists it as temporarily closed, but the Instagram account for the business has been deleted, and the listed phone number is disconnected. Although a Facebook account for the eatery is still online, its last posts were promoting Mother's Day brunch.
Meanwhile, Referee's Sports Cantina, a short-lived breastaurant that opened at 2623 NE Loop 410 in early 2024, has updated its Instagram and Facebook account names to Mezcal Comida Cantina. The logo matches the sign on Palomar's former address.
The Referee's rebranding appears to be a work in progress. On Instagram, only the name was changed while the sports bar's risque posts remained. Over on Facebook, the names of both concepts are listed, along with the new West Avenue address. The account began posting a series of food photos on August 29.
Palomar quietly took over the former home of El Bosque Mexican Restaurant in the summer of 2023. The latter closed in June 2020 after a 40-year run, citing a loss of business during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The colorful new spot initially drew raves for its chocoflan, crispy enchiladas verdes, fajitas, poblano mac 'n' cheese, and colorful margaritas. It was a frequently recommended spot on the influential San Antonio Restaurants Facebook group.
The most recent Yelp reviews, however, are less kind. Although few complained about Palomar's food and atmosphere, several reviewers cited disgruntled staff and disinterested service. While the low star rating may support a rebranding hypothesis, there are no public records linking Palomar to Mezcal.
Email and social media requests for more details were not returned in time for publication, and none of the phone numbers associated with the restaurants accepted voice messages.
