Iconic San Antonio soul food kitchen stages surprise comeback

Mrs. Kitchen is bringing its fried catfish and Southern sides back to the East Side.
Iconic soul food restaurant Mrs. Kitchen is making a surprise comeback. After shuttering in 2024, the much-loved homestyle restaurant is headed back to the East Side, opening at 2351 E Commerce St #105 on October 10.
"Guess who's back, San Antonio?" read the October 6 post. "Mrs. Kitchen Soul Food Restaurant. The wait is over. Come celebrate our reopening this Friday, October 10, at 11am."
Mrs. Kitchen first opened in 2011, serving out of a modest building on East Commerce Street. After surviving the COVID-19 lockdown, it moved in early 2021 to a much larger space on Walzem Road in Windcrest. By 2024, post-pandemic economic pressures were eating at the restaurant's bottom line.
In August 2024, chef and owner Garlan L. McPherson announced that the restaurant was no longer sustainable. He quietly closed Mrs. Kitchen and started a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of reopening. The initiative raised around $3,200.

"Due to rising costs, we have not been able to keep the doors open and are needing your help to reopen," McPherson wrote at the time. "I understand that a lot of folks are going through hardships at this time, but if you find it in your heart to help my small business, it would be greatly appreciated."
In its prime, Mrs. Kitchen was one of the top-rated soul food restaurants in San Antonio. Guests raved about the fried catfish, smothered pork chops, freshly-made sides, and sweets like the hummingbird cake.
It's unclear if McPherson will make any tweaks to the menu, but the atmosphere is much the same. The walls still have a hodgepodge of photos celebrating icons like Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, and Prince.
Mrs. Kitchen will reopen at 11 am on its grand reopening day. The restaurant has yet to post its future regular hours.
