Unexpected au revoir
La Madeleine bakery closes oldest San Antonio location after 32 years

La Madeleine is closing out its time on Broadway with an equipment sale.
La Madeleine, a popular bakery chain headquartered in Dallas, started off 2025 with a big closure in San Antonio. The oldest location in town, at 4820 Broadway, has closed.
La Madeleine also closed a location in the Woodlands near Houston at the same time. However, these appear to be the only recent closures.
San Antonians got a bit more information thanks to a post in the San Antonio Restaurants group on Facebook. It announced the closure and an equipment sale, which an update extends to Monday, January 5, starting at 9:30 am. The post gathered more than 280 comments by the early hours of Monday.
Although chains may come and go, this location has become a local staple since its opening in 1992, nine years after it started in Dallas. This location was also the most central to San Antonio, across from Central Market and about a mile from Brackenridge Park.
It was the farthest south the chain reached in San Antonio, but four more locations remain. The closest is at 722 NW Loop 410, about five and a half miles away. Similarly, more locations remain open in Houston.
La Madeleine is best known for its French pastries like croissants, quiche, and tarts. But it also serves casual all-day meals such as soups, sandwiches, and pasta dishes in a rustic, homey atmosphere. The restaurants also contain small market sections that stock items like sauces and preserves.
