OPENING ALERT
Popular San Antonio ramen chain quietly opens new Northwest Side shop

Tsukemen (dipping ramen) is among Hoka Hoka Fuku's nine styles.
One of San Antonio’s most popular ramen chains has quietly pulled off a threepeat. Hoka Hoka Fuku Japanese Kitchen debuted its third restaurant at 10222 Huebner Rd. #102, bringing Japanese street fare to a new shop on the Northwest Side.
Chef Andy Bunto opened his first restaurant near Helotes in September 2021, serving much-needed comfort food in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. He followed up with a second outpost on Bandera Road in November 2024.
Noodles are at the heart of the menu. Hoka Hoka serves nine styles of ramen, including three varieties with tonkotsu broth, a yuzu-scented mazesoba (brothless) bowl, and tsukemen (dipping) ramen. The counter service joint also dishes out udon topped with tempura vegetables, karaage, or beef.

The appetizer menu is a tour of some of Japan’s most popular snacks. In addition to crowd pleasers like spicy edamame and steamed pork buns, Hoka Hoka carries takoyaki (octopus balls), iso geso age (deep-fried squid tentacles), and crispy agedashi tofu served with grated daikon.
The menu is rounded off by more carbs: yakisoba, donburi rice bowls with chicken teriyaki or chashu pork, and katsu, including a premium Berkshire pork option and a mozzarella and pork combo. For dessert, diners can opt for Haikkado-style egg tarts or the viral Japanese cotton cheesecake, ultra-fluffy, jiggly custards made by whipping meringue into the batter.
The name combines the Japanese onomatopoeia “hoka hoka,” usually used to describe “steaming hot” food, and “fuku” for “good fortune.” For Bunto, it seems the former brought about the latter.
The newest Hoka Hoka Fuku is now open seven days a week. Hours are 11 am-3 pm and 5-9 pm, Monday through Friday; 11 am-9 pm, Saturday; and noon-9 pm, Sunday.
