H-E-B reveals opening date for $29 million far west San Antonio store

After months of anticipation, H-E-B’s newest store is finally opening. The $29 million location, anchoring a development at 15489 Culebra Rd. on the Far West Side, will debut on January 7.

Locals first got wind of the store through a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation listing that initially estimated a summer 2025 completion. The San Antonio retailer has been tight-lipped about the new project, sharing few details about the project.

However, a project page on H-E-B’s development website does offer some hints as to what H-E-B megafans can expect. The store will include gas pumps, a carwash, a drive-thru pharmacy, a curbside pick-up station, and — perhaps most excitingly — a H-E-B True Texas BBQ restaurant. Two pad retail buildings will complete the compound.

The glossy new storefront positions H-E-B in one of San Antonio’s most rapidly growing quadrants. Two other H-E-B locations, at 12125 Alamo Ranch Pkwy and 19325 Potranco Rd., are within a 15-minute drive, reflective of Alamo City’s increasingly westward sprawl.

The population boom is spurring a ton of new construction, including housing, Big Tech data centers, and several retail hubs, including the $3.48 million Delphi at Potranco and the restaurant-heavy Portico at Shaenfield Ranch. Local entertainment giant Santikos is also building a complex at Potranco Road and Highway 211 with luxury auditoriums, a bowling alley, and an arcade.

The Culebra Road H-E-B will be the grocer’s second brick-and-mortar debut in six months. In early August, H-E-B opened a new 111,000-square-foot store at 7330 N Loop 1604 W in College Park. As with the brand-new Culebra Road location, it serves an equally red-hot area around the University of Texas at San Antonio main campus.

Buzzy Italian wrap chain debuts in San Antonio with 2 new restaurants

Piada is known for its signature wrapped sandwiches.

Buzzy fast-casual chain Piada Italian Street Food will soon make its San Antonio-area debut with two new restaurants. The growing brand, known for its unique wrap-type sandwiches, is opening outposts at 11745 I-10 W #501 in the Huebner Oaks Center and 18430 I-35 N in Scherz Station in early 2026.

Piada was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 2010 by Chris Doody. The entrepreneur took inspiration from the roadside family-run food carts and markets he encountered in Rimini, a seaside community in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.

The signature dish is the piada, a thin-crust, handmade dough baked on a stone grill, filled with ingredients, then rolled into a handheld often called an “Italian taco.” Guests can get the sandwich stuffed with avocado and pancetta, bruschetta tomatoes, carbonara penne, or a Caesar blend.

Other entrées include seasonal chopped salads, traditional pastas topped with marinara and other sauces, and “fit bowls” keyed to keto and high-protein diets. Sides range from simple mac ‘n’ cheese bowls to a Hot Pocket-style pastry filled with meatballs, sausage, or creamy spinach and artichoke.

The interiors are typically clean and modern, with concrete floors, LED lighting, white oak furniture, Carrara marble, brushed aluminum, and painted brick. Subway tiles backdrop the ordering counter, where diners can customize their order a la Chipotle.

Although the two locations have been quietly announced by Piada, the company has yet to reveal the exact opening dates. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filings say that the Huebner Oaks location is set to finish its buildout in March. The Scherz Station outlet was initially expected to be completed in December 2025.
