COMING ATTRACTIONS
Beloved San Antonio deli takes break while chef builds something new

Gigi's Deli is taking a break while its chef works on a new concept.
One of San Antonio’s most acclaimed sandwich shops is taking a break, but don’t cry over your cold cuts just yet. Gigi’s Deli will be on hiatus from April 19 through June while its Tastemaker Award-nominated chef, Matt Garcia, works on Miles, his first full-service concept.
The small deli, inside El Tigre Coffee Roasters in St. Paul Square, announced the break via an Instagram post.
“What started as a small idea grew into something so much bigger,” wrote Garcia. “Long days, loud rooms, familiar faces, and a feeling that I still can’t put into words. For the past six months and five years before that, this city not only raised me but has challenged and shaped everything about me. From the way I cook and host, to even the way I see the world.”
Garcia, an alum of The Cookhouse and Barbaro, started GiGi’s in 2021 with a pop-up at St. Mary’s Strip wine bar Little Death. The concept quickly drew a cult following, eventually leading to a proper brick-and-mortar at 123 Heiman St. in September 2025.
Still, the chef’s ambition has never been just about making the perfect grinder. When his idea for a third-place neighborhood restaurant and bar came to life, he knew he had to make some choices.
“Gigi’s is a one-man band — and I can’t be in two places at once,” said the busy chef in a quick phone conversation.
Garcia is partnering with El Tigre owner Tatanka Guerrero to bring his vision to the former Francis Bogside space. For now, he's mostly keeping quiet about the details.
He did share that Miles is a “San Antonio-inspired bar and bistro” that will feature classic cocktails and a considered wine list. Locals will have to wait a little longer to see exactly what’s on the menu.
Fans might be able to get a little more chisme during CultureMap’s annual Tastemaker Awards at the Briscoe Museum. Garcia is a contender in two categories — Best Sandwich and Rising Star Chef of the Year.
